The New Google Categories Update in Google Shopping

We have implemented the new Google Categories in DataFeedWatch. This post tells you

1. What those changes are,
2. What the consequences are for you.

What was changed in Google's Taxonomy?

A while ago we wrote about changes in Google Shopping feed specification, that were introduced in June 2015 and needed to be implemented by September 15, 2015.

Part of the new specification is a new organization of Google Product Taxonomy (categories). The changes include:

  1. Simplified Google product taxonomy paths. You no longer need to provide subcategories of:
    • Coats & Jackets
    • Shirts & Tops
    • Pants
    • Shorts
    • Swimwear
    • Handbags
    • Shoes
    • Medicine & Drugs
    • Books
    • Video Game Console Accessories
  2. Most of the categories under Activewear are now included with their non-active counterparts, for example, 'Active Skirts' will now be found under 'Skirts'. These categories include:
    • Active Dresses
    • Active Jackets
    • Active Leotards
    • Active Pants
    • Active Shirts
    • Active Shorts
    • Active Skirts
    • Active Tanks
    • Active Undergarments
    • Activewear Sets
  3. More subcategories to the verticals:
    • Food, Beverages & Tobacco
    • Mature
  4. Some verticals have undergone significant rework, and you may wish to revisit your provided Google product categories for items that are part of these categories:
    • Arts & Crafts
    • Decor
    • Hardware
    • Sporting Goods
    • Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories

On top of that Google now allows providing category IDs in the feed instead of category paths.

We believe that this system is more consistent, as it will not be required to update categories in the feed every time Google decides to change the taxonomy, since they will most likely keep the category ids unchanged. Thus, from now on all DataFeedWatch customers will see category ids in place of category paths in their Google Shopping feeds.

What is the consequence for you?

Google still accepts the 'old categories', so don't worry: Your Google feed is still ok.

If you have these outdated categories in your data feed, you will see a warning message in your DataFeedWatch account. We do recommend that you check and update your Google Categories in that case:
As mentioned above Google has gotten rid of a lot of sub-categories in the new taxonomy. Re-categorization is not mandatory, but it is always better to keep your categories up-to-date.
